One of the defining features of the Graduate Program in Philosophy (PPGF) is its ongoing commitment to the philosophical tradition, understood as the rigorous study of original texts by thinkers recognized by the philosophical community — with particular emphasis on contemporary authors. From its inception through 2024, the PPGF focused on Contemporary Philosophy as its main area of concentration.
As the program grew and consolidated, and with the arrival of faculty members from diverse academic backgrounds, the PPGF broadened its scope. Starting in 2025, it adopted Philosophy as its general area of concentration, aligning itself with leading programs across the country. This change reflects the program’s maturity and its openness to a plurality of philosophical perspectives.
Despite this expansion, the study of modernity and its development has always held a central place within the program. A close reading of modern philosophy is considered essential to understanding contemporary philosophical questions. The same applies to research in the History of Philosophy — ancient and medieval — which is pursued through dedicated projects and integrated into the themes of our research lines.
Today, the PPGF is fully equipped — thanks to its highly qualified faculty — to supervise and coordinate research across multiple areas of philosophy. This includes both thematic lines of inquiry and historical periods of philosophy — ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary — driven by faculty members who are nationally and internationally recognized for their leadership in research projects.
The PPGF is also a reference in the ongoing debate about the role of women in philosophy. This engagement is expressed through the active participation of scholars in initiatives that promote the visibility of women in the history of philosophy, as well as in research that addresses gender issues from a critical and contemporary philosophical standpoint.
The major themes of the philosophical tradition — both classical and canonical — are also explored across our research groups, and are central to many master’s theses and doctoral dissertations produced by our graduate students.
Proud to be the first graduate program in Philosophy in the state of Bahia — and home to the state’s only doctoral program in the field — the PPGF remains open to philosophical thought and dialogue in all its forms, grounded in the strong academic training and national and international engagement of its faculty.
